Meet
Carrie Carlson
I am a counseling intern pursuing a Master of Arts in Counseling at Western Seminary. With more than 20 years of experience as an educator and school administrator, I have dedicated my career to supporting the growth, development, and well-being of children, teens, and families. My background in education has given me a deep understanding of the academic, social, emotional, spiritual, and family challenges people experience across different stages of life.
As a parent, I also understand the joys, challenges, and complexities of supporting children and young people through each stage of development. I am passionate about working with children, adolescents, and adults, and I consider it a privilege to walk alongside clients as they navigate life's challenges and discover new opportunities for growth and healing.
MY PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH
I strive to create a warm, authentic, and judgment-free environment where clients feel heard, valued, and understood. I believe a trusting therapeutic relationship is the foundation for meaningful growth and lasting change. My approach is collaborative and person-centered, helping clients build on their strengths, deepen self-awareness, develop healthy coping skills, navigate life transitions, and cultivate resilience.
My Christian faith shapes my understanding of hope, healing, and the inherent value of every person. When welcomed by clients, I am honored to thoughtfully integrate faith and spirituality into the counseling process in ways that align with their goals and beliefs.
Whether I am working with children facing emotional or behavioral challenges, teens navigating identity and relationships, or adults managing the complexities of life, my goal is to provide compassionate support as clients grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships, and move toward greater healing, resilience, and well-being.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
I have worked in the education world for over 20 years as a high school English and writing teacher, a dean of students, and most recently as an assistant principal. As an educator, I have in-depth knowledge of school systems as well as the challenges and joys that learning can bring.
As a graduate student at Western Seminary, I have been able to gain knowledge and experience in multiple modalities of counseling, counseling theories and techniques, suicide and crisis counseling, legal and ethical issues, introductory play therapy, family counseling, addictions, group, and trauma counseling.
SUPERVISION
As a professional counselor graduate intern I am working toward becoming a Registered Associate with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists, and I abide by its code of ethics. My supervisor is Dr. Michelle Engblom-Deglmann, PhD, LMFT (OR) License # T1004.
