Josiah Miu

Professional Counselor Graduate Level Intern - Serving Adults

Meet

Josiah Miu

When was the last time you felt like you?

Who are you when the calendar is empty, the messages are all responded to, and the clothes are all folded? Somewhere under the deadlines, expectations, and endless to-dos, that person is still in there. Therapy is breathing room, a space to see what is in the way and reconnect with what has felt lost.

Everything I do starts from one place. When you can be your true self, the color comes back. I work with people who pour everything into what they do, and I know firsthand what it costs. Therapy, with me, is the space to find your way back. Because when we get back to what matters, the challenges we face begin to fade.

MY PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

A wooden table with a glass jar containing a bouquet of white flowers and green leaves, positioned next to a window with white curtains.

There are several approaches I draw on:

Humanistic Psychology emphasizes your personal agency. It encourages you to embrace your uniqueness, strive for personal growth, and see the value of your perspective.

Emotionally Focused Therapy looks at our emotional bonds. The ones that shape us and the ones that hurt us. We learn to understand what we feel and, actually, feel safe enough to say it.

Narrative Therapy sees your life as a story. Not all of it was written by you. Some chapters were written for you, by what happened, or by what you were told you were. When we look at those chapters together, we can find a different way to read them. Sometimes we write new ones.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

I spent over a decade in the corporate tech world, building systems that help people work better together. That work taught me to think in systems. I notice the patterns in the tools we use every day, and how those patterns shape the way people connect. After several years in the corporate world, I made an intentional move into the non-profit sector, where I got to work hand in hand with mission-driven teams.

As a graduate student, at the University of the Cumberlands, my training spans Human Growth & Development, Legal & Ethical Issues in Counseling, Lifestyle & Career Development, Multicultural Counseling, Research Methods, the Etiology and Diagnosis of Mental Disorders, Group Therapy, Psychological Assessment, Advanced Clinical Assessment, Child & Adolescent Counseling, Marriage & Family Counseling, and the Theory and Treatment of Addiction and Substance Abuse.

NOTABLE

Volunteering is a meaningful part of my life. For several years, I was a youth mentor, walking alongside adolescents and teens as they navigated life's challenges. Today, I have the privilege of serving with a non-profit that supports children and families through a childhood cancer diagnosis.

SUPERVISION

As a professional counselor graduate intern I am working toward becoming a Registered Associate with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists, and I abide by its code of ethics. My supervisor is Dr. Michelle Engblom-Deglmann, PhD, LMFT (OR) License # T1004.

A heart shape surrounded by chaotic scribbles.
